Almost finished reading Flowers for Algernon so thought would pick up another book while seem to be going well. Brought 'We Who Are About To...'
Its Sci-Fi and just the cover looked interesting. Only short story by size of book but plot sounds interesting. About group who get stranded on a strange planet and decided they have to repopulate to help survive, but the main character who is one of only couple of woman doesn't want to

Hope ok to bump this... I getting lax with reading things other then comics so though would post again as incentive. Brought myself 'The First Men in the Moon' by H G Wells. The story is about two men who journey to the moon and find a hive-like race of aliens. It seemed good from writing on the back, only few pages in so far but I like it. Hard to think it was written in 1901

I just finished rereading SHADOW OF THE WIND. A fantastic book! I'm not sure what I will read next. I have some new ones at home, but sometimes you like some repeats.

I never re-read a book just comics. Some I want to but something new usually gets my attention more. Think it good idea though, am sure there are things I would have missed first read.

SHADOW OF THE WIND is a great book if you are someone who gets easily lost in the storyline and characters. I randomly picked it up at a bookstore one day and I loved it. I read it again every few years because it's that good.

I like libraries, but can see why they fail. my local one never has new books in and half is turn to a cafe shop. I go to one next town away, has more choice even if it more effort.

I really think that libraries are, perhaps, not going the way of the dodo, but something is up with them. I know that they can't possibly have decent budgets (at least around where I live) because Sรธren is correct- my library rarely has anything I'm looking for and I am not looking for niche genre books I'm talking what can be considered classics.
I've been disgusted with the prices of e-books; when they cost as much or more than DTB (and hardcover at that) then I give up.
What do you think of actually having a small yearly fee for having a library card so there are more books?

The big city libraries and larger town ones seem to do well, have fancy modern checking out machines and computers so think they have good budgets. It small village and town libraries are bad.
I don't use a library much, if they were better I might so a yearly fee doesn't seem bad idea or just donation box like many museums, people can be surprisingly generous from what seen when it comes to keeping local amenities open. if it gets better books in or the space used too its has to be good.

On one hand, it flies in the face of the basic premise of a public library system. All people regardless of rich or poor deserve access to books. I suppose if the fee was a suggestion, not a requirement, I'd be okay with it. And most would probably pay the fee. But it might be a source of embarrassment for those who truly can't afford it. Probably better to get book vendors and publishers more involved in grants to local libraries. Maybe community fund drives to generate money to support the local libraries, too? Idk.

When it comes to libraries I think a lot of people also just don't know how they've modernized. Lots of libraries have ebook collections, audiobooks, movies, all sorts of things; there's a big digital component that, from my experience volunteering at my local library, people just aren't aware of. Not all libraries are the same, but it's something. More funding would be great, though. It wouldn't be an issue to have that in our budget, and we wouldn't need to resort to needing anyone to pay more than what they already do in taxes.
I'm currently in the middle of Emma, by Jane Austen, and The Secret Life of Bees, by Sue Monk Kidd.

I can understand why people don't feel that they should pay a tiny fee to use a library -I really do get it. But when you're public library doesn't even carry many of the classics as well as the very popular genres and series then something is wrong with budgeting (I think, I'm not sure and I have nothing to back this up).
When I talk a 'fee' I'm talking about a dollar or two per year ---don't forget I'm talking locally so maybe it is just a problem with my library.
Oh and I'm reading a series by Linda Castillo - the Kate Burkholder series.
I did Emma a while ago, I'm not good with that sort of writing.
