Newbie here:
I just created a new discussion board, which I want to be private - and only available to invited members.
So,
1), is there any specific settings (beside what I did below) I can use to make sure this is a private forum?
2), about inviting members: what I did is go to Overview > Settings > Forum Settings > Login & Registration ... and I sent emails to those I want to invite using "Send Invite Key Email."
Is this the correct way to invite new members? Is there any other way? (I also set it so I have to approve new members, which I thought was another way (or the way) to keep this a private discussion.
All the best, David

freedda, do you want the forum content to be viewable by non-members?

No, I want it to be viewed only by those I invite and appprove. So, the other part of my question is, did I do the invites correctly, as I descrbed above?
Thanks,

If you wanted to send invite keys, yep that is the way to do it.

freedda, you have every thing set properly as far as your membership. However, visitors will still be able to view and post content. To change this, the easiest way is to enable the Guests Must Login feature. Go to Admin > Settings > Forum Settings, then Login & Registration tab. Under Login Settings click on 'yes' for the Guests Must Login. Now I should mention, that even though that feature is called "guests must login", based on the way you have membership configured they will not be able to. All visitors will see is a splash page hiding the forum. There are 2 buttons on the page: Login and Register. Your members will be able to use the Login button, and since you have registration disabled, anyone clicking the Register button will receive a message the registration is disabled for the forum. Let me know if you have any questions.

Scott, this is completely confusing!!!
I want to restrict my forum to just those people I invite in. I don't want anyone else viewing it. That's why I selected the settings I did.
I thought what I was doing would allow them to register, but it would require my approval before they could use the board - I never intended to block them, or stop them from registering, or loggin in, or stop them from using the discussion forum.
So, given what I want to do, can you tell me - step by step - what is the best and easiest way to get there: to allow me to invite people, and allow them into the forum so they can use it, and at the same time, restrict the forum to just those whom I invite in (it is private, not public).
Otherwise, I am completely baffled by how this is supposed to work.
Regards, David

freedda, based on the way your forum is currently configured you just need to do 2 simple things: Go to Admin > Settings > Forum Settings, Login & Registration tab. 1. Find the Guests Must Login and set that to "Yes" 2. Scroll down to Restrict Registration and set that to "No" With those 2 adjustments only those you send the Key Invite Email to will be able to register and immediately participate on the forum with no action needed on your part. And, anyone visiting the forum that is not an invited member will not be able to view the contents or participate. If you still want to approve the registrations of those you personally invited, then just only do #1 above.

Thanks so much! I will make these changes.
My final question is (for now!), with these changes in the settings what's to keep someone from the 'outside' (not invited) from seeing or joining into the forum? Is there some other setting that deals with that, or?
Best, D.

freedda, nope, the settings that I recommend and you implemented already took care of that.

freedda, since you are inviting the members you want, you should leave registration disabled.

Scott, when I send the invite key what are my friends supposed to see on the other end? Do they get an email? Who from? And what does it tell them or let them do?
Something is still amiss and I'm trying to figure it out, but I'm not sure my friends are even getting the entry key emails?
Do they need to be registered with proboards first for any of this to work?
And it seems one of my friends was able to get in and post, but she couldn't register? I've never heard of a forum or discussion board where you don't register first, where you create a user name and password and once approved, you use these to log into the discussion?
This is way too confusing and it seems like it shouldn't be!!!! I can set up a board in less than a minute then spend hours figuring out how to let others in to use it?
And is there any other way to make this work?
D

I attached images of screen shots of my settings. I'm wondering, maybe I should enable registration but still keep it so I have to approve new folk? And if I did this, which screen do I go to to approve registrations? I can no longer find it d

Okay, I'm thinking I should make my settings like this? I think with these settings I can send those I want the URL for the site, tell them to register first, I then have to approve the registration (and which screen do I do this from?) And once all this has happened, they should be able to just come to the site and log in? (Because they now have 'approved' registrations)? Thanks again.
