Forum URL: 300citizens.proboards.comMy board is relatively new so I'm testing a few functions before adding more members. The site is by invitation only, so a non-invited party cannot register and add to threads. If one tries to register, they get an error message that "registration is disabled on this site". I next tried to post a response to a thread without having logged in ...as if i was a non-member. A "Quick reply" screen popped up. The upper left corner had a box for 'Guest name'. I input a few xxxxxs and then few lines of xxxs in the message field and next hit quick reply. I then got the "prove you are not a robot" message. I completed that. Then i got a 2nd message of "you must agree to ProBoards terms of service before posting'. Agreed and input. It then repeats the robot message. Three questions: 1) Can I assume that a guest cannot post on my board? 2) Why not stop the guest early and give them an error message up front similar to the message one gets should they try to register? 3) The empty guest "quick reply" box remains. I can't get rid of it. It may confuse new users who login properly and wish to post to this thread. How can i get rid of it? Thanks.

Hi deltadelta I just created a thread and replied to it, for testing purposes. (I was successful.) Feel free to delete that thread. If you want to prevent guest posting on the General Discussion board of your forum, you'll need to change the Permission settings. From your Admin panel, navigate: Admin Home> Structure> Categories & BoardsHover over the listing for the General Discussion board and a group of icons will appear. Click on the Edit Properties and a popup will appear. Click on the Permission tab of the popup and change the settings as described below. Leave the permissions for view and access to Everyone, if you want guests to be able to see what others have written. Set the permissions for create threads, reply to threads, and create polls to Members & Staff. This will prevent guests from posting and also remove the quick reply box from the view of guests. Then click the Save Changes button in the bottom-right of the popup.

deltadelta, fyi - all new forums allow for guest posting. If you wish for only registered members to post, then you would need to change the board permissions as Retread explained above. Additionally, if you do not want guests to post OR view the contents of your forum, you can enable the Guest Must Login splash page which hides the forum and offers two buttons: one for members to Login and one for guests to Register an account. This can be set up by going to Admin > Settings > Forum Settings, Login & Registration tab. Note: if you choose this option you would not need to set the board permissions.

Then click the Save Changes button in the bottom-right of the popup. We have been getting spammed in the last couple of days bu using the guest posting method. The create and reply and permissions are set to Members & Staff for the board they used, so it seems that something else needs to be done on our forum.
Could we have something set that classifies guests as Members & Staff?
Also, if this were to work, would we have to change the permissions on every board, or is there a global setting that would disallow guest to post?

tpgettys, I spot checked some of the boards and found a couple that have permissions set for Everyone to post. Example, the board: Black & White Challenge. I suggest you review the permissions of all the boards.

I swear I checked the permissions on that board as well, but your are right, they are now set to Everyone. I am, I think the correct term is, gobsmacked!
Thank you for checking into this.
