Hi,
I wanted to know if I could disable likes for some subforums of my game modding forum and not others. This community has been around for a long time and there are some old wounds and rivalries that will probably never fully heal. I've found through watching other similar groups and forums on other platforms, that 'likes' can and are sometimes used as a form of silent hostility towards other members.
example:
A member can make a new topic with an idea or suggestion for the project my community is working on. One of the more crotchety members of the forum might make a rude comment like "This is a dumb idea" and then that dissenting post gets a bunch of likes from lurking members who otherwise don't have much to say. It might not have as much weight if it were a single comment coming from one person, but the other lurking members adding likes to mean posts and not to the positive/supporting ones tend to add insult to injury. This makes new members feel like their thoughts and ideas are invalid and unwelcome, and these members tend to not stick around for very long.
It's a bit of double edged sword because these comments sometimes come from very useful/productive members of the community and therefore banning them would cause a noticeable drop in the quality of our projects. I could warn or ban members that write the negative posts, but that still leaves the lurkers who tend to 'like' negative things. Do I have to start exercising moderator action on what you're allowed to 'like' now?
Our projects are driven heavily by criticism and feedback, and while the harshly negative stuff can be difficult to read, they can also very helpful to our development (as long as a person doesn't feel like the message is a personal attack on them, and it's never easy to tell) I've had to remove likes because my community has a lot of diverse opinions. I am anticipating that allowing likes will give people an easy passive-aggressive method to express hostility towards another member or group without having to write the words themselves and attach their name to the idea.
On the other hand, my board has a music and anime subforum where people can post recommendations on what to watch or listen to, and I feel that liking posts can be a very positive feature there, because sometimes it's hard to write a thoughtful comment on someone's music preference but when people post their videos and music preferences there, people tend to think they are not being heard.
