alert for simultanious thread-edits

Hello all.

Quite a specific problem I have.

My forum allows users to submit (football related) articles. For obvious reasons I do not expect my members to be journalists so we have an editor on standby who then edits where needed. 

As we are growing, we discovered this can cause for a conflict when both author and editor are editing the article at the same time. If 2 members are editing a thread at the same time it will be the last one saving the edit who trumps over the first. This is only logical, as last saved is last preserved.

So what is my question? How can I prevent this? Is there a plugin who might give a pop up when someone is already editing a certain thread? Or maybe the edit button can be locked if a member is editing a post so a second member can not enter the edit screen? Or even a combination of both?

Does something like this exist?

I don't know about a plugin, but if the editor is staff with permissions to lock the thread temporarily, that might be a good workaround.

I don't think a plugin would be able to prevent that. It is a good suggestion for the future though, that there can be a warning if someone else is editing the post.

I will mark this as a feature request.

That is actually not a bad idea. 

By extending my editor with an extra power he can "lock the door" as it were, and work in the thread for the duration of the time. This will already solve at least 50% of the cases and preserve the work of the editor.

Added question, seen on a timeline. I'm going to speak about author and editor in this example. Author wrote the article, editor is the human spellcheck. See the following steps as if they were following each other on a timeline.

Author makes an article and saves is.
Author sees a mistake and goes into editpage.
Editor sees a new article and locks the thread.
Editor goes into editpage.
Author saves his edit .... is this still possible at this point? Will the author get a "locked thread" pop up?

Will the author have a chance to back up his edits?

If not I guess this will result to the same principle of the author losing his edit/update.

I believe the author would get an error of some sort when they try to save, but I'm not sure if they would lose their work or be able to copy it out to try after the thread is unlocked. The editor could always make a post saying the thread is temporarily locked for edits, then delete that post when they're done, I suppose.

The Author will get a message  " Oops, there was an error! You do not have permission to edit this post."

Clicking the back button on their browser should return them to the edit screen. At this point they can copy the contents of the post and save it in a Notepad file (or equivalent).

Once the Editor is done and unlocks the thread, I guess the Author can compare their saved edits to the Editor's changes and then decide if their post needs updating or not.
