Some people have had their threads totally trashed by spammers; btw, said spammers are often long established members who should know better.
Often, members who have experienced this will make a qualifying statement asking people not to post unless they intend to stay on topic.
One such request was made recently, and the OP stated that her last thread on the particular subject was derailed by some members having a picture war. In this case, I was able to direct her to another board, which best suited her needs. But, it was unfortunate that she felt she needed to make a don't post, statement, thanks to the behaviour of some members.
Those picture wars/competition, seem to be the latest way to derail, trash and spam a thread. Recently, there was a thread which contained two pages of pictures and requoting posts with those pictures. Not only had they nothing to do with the topic, some of the images stretched the pages. Luckily, I got a modify button and know how to use it.
So, yes, I do have sympathy with some qualifying statements.

As long as the topic asks people to say what they think about said subject, I think it's stupid that the thread starter or other people start bashing those who don't like it and tell them not to post if they don't.
However, I think it should be common sense that when you see a topic intended specifically for fans of a certain subject that you should stay out if you don't like it. Barging in just to say how much said subject sucks and how much you hate it and how idiots other people are for liking it it just downright rude.
Taking for example rap, which seems to be just as controversial as anime around here, if the topic is "Do you like rap" I can see the logic in saying you don't and all that jazz. But as long as the topic asks "What is your favorite rap song" or "What is your favorite rap singer", it's pretty much logical that it's intended to those who actually like the topic and it's natural for the thread starter to get all angry if people suddenly start saying they hate it.
Judging by attitudes I've seen around lately, I tend to agree with those who say "don't like it, don't post", simply because certain people aren't just happy with saying they don't like something any more, but they seem intent into hijacking the topics into idiotic picture wars just to show how cool they are and how stupid the "likers" are. These are the immature ones, not those who ask them to stop posting in the topic.

Personally, when I create threads, I intend for discussion amongst people who feel the same way about the subject. I usually clarify in the OP if I'm looking for general opinions, or more looking for like-minded folk. Perhaps for people who do get their feathers ruffled when people post an opposing opinion, they can clarify in the OP that they're looking for people who agree and can have a discussion on why/how they agree on said subject. That way, they'd have more grounds [imho] to ask any opposing folk to not post, since they didn't ask for their opinion, but rather for discussion in line with their way of thinking..?
Of course, that's more for the anime/artist/band/movie/show/book etc type of thread, not the 'debate' threads. =]

Just posting 'Rap Sucks' isn't good enough, but saying 'Rap is not music because there's no real singing' would be a better comment.

Going with "'Rap is not music because there's no real singing", perhaps begin it with "I think that"...?

You do make a good point ASE, it's even better if you say why you don't like that subject, rap for example. But Kami has made a good ammendment, it's probably safe to state your reasons as personal opinions and not as facts. It's a shame that people quite often do state them as facts and this ends in even more arguments.
