For those of us that have had custom skins created for our forums; is v5 likely to cause any proplems with the customised skin display/layout at all? Thank you. This question has been asked in the beta area, but since you don't yet have access to that area, I'll paste the responses for you below: Many, many codes will no longer be needed. Many codes will be simpler to implement. While the vast majority of codes designed for v4.5 will not be compatible, it will be 10x easier to deal with codes in v5 because you will have access to the HTML for the forum (instead of only being able to edit headers/footers). Most skins will need to be remade completely into what we are now calling themes. However there will be a three month window of time before launch when you will be able to prep your forum and update your skins to themes. (there will be) A comprehensive help guide, though they're simpler than skins to implement. There is also advanced themes for users that want to take forum editing even further. Again, the help guide will cover everything. Will there be a period where we can choose to update a board before its mandatory? Like a test forum? There will be a three month time frame before we upgrade all forums where you will be able to do so at your convenience. Hopefully those will give you an idea of what to expect down the road. Once you have access to the beta, you can continue on with that discussion there if you have further concerns

Gah! It would seem that the skin won't work. A big step backwards for people like me who have no idea how to make the skin let alone amend it. Somebody else made it for me.

I am someone who is only semi-computer literate, and I put a TON of time (I think about 1 hour AVERAGE for EACH skin I created, because I tried to find the perfect color match) and effort selecting colors and such to match the background pictures I put in place for my skins. Isn't there any possible way to just allow us to transfer everything? I have something like fifteen or more skins on my forum for people to choose from!!!!!! As well as customized "hot buttons" (for the "Home," "Register," "Login," etc. at the top of the pages)!

The colors will not change. It sunds daunting, but it won't be too bad. Mostly, the only 'problems' will be if you are using codes to modify areas of the board, for example, you are using codes to modify the welcome table. Those are what will no longer work. However, like has been posted, those codes will no longer be needed because you will be able to edit the HTML directly instead of having to add a code to dynamically change it. It will be far easier. Also, again, there will be a 3 month 'grace' period where you can play with a beta version of yoru forum before your forum is upgraded, and you will be able to get your 'theme' set up there [you will be able to save it, and then easily upload it to your forum, so there is no hassle there]. Moreover, we will be here to help you with any issues you may have

So, be prepared for LOTS of questions from me when everything gets switched over!!!!!!!

It's an update to the forum itself, so when v5 is released and applied to your forum, all of your members will be automatically brought to the new software without having to do anything extra is there a way to switch from v5 to v4 in the admin settings? just worried that v5 will screw up all my settings and skins

We won't be supporting both systems. We're creating v5 knowing there are a lot of forums out there that are customized. Anything you have on your forum currently will be far easier to implement in v5, and we're even going to have a beta process closer to the release of v5 where all forum owners will be able to create a v5 copy of their forum, so you can prepare for the final upgrade without affecting your current forum, and we'll be able to offer you any assistance you may need at that time

At this point in time, the beta is just on a copy of this support forum. But a future beta process closer to release, you will be able to make a copy of your forum using v5. The color schemes that you have currently on the modify skin page of your v4 forum will be implemented into v5.

ok... so will I get 2 forums, one V4 and one V5? can i see v5beta on this forum? During that beta process in the future, yes, your main forum on v4 would still be working as it is on v4. However, a copy of your forum will be converted to v5 for you to test on and check it out. However, that copy will just be a copy, and is not a permanent forum. You can sign up for the beta that's currently running on this support forum by visiting www.proboards.com/beta and once you're selected, you'll be emailed the details of how to access it
