That is possibly what i will find disappointing, if he sits on the bench too much. But don't begrudge him the opportunity. He's been here 6 years, and been a regular, almost ever present, under 3 different managers, and the manager before that tried to sign him too, before he chose Sunderland. So there is something about him, and you'll be getting a great professional who will do a job for you. Oh, and we'd like him back when you get promoted, please! ;D Interested to see who his replacement will be. We've had another of yours on trial, and looks likely to sign - Leon best. Hopefully, however, we will pick up a lower league player who can step up. Actually starting to get a bit excited about this season now. Ward looks a great signing, and a steal [ i think Norwich fans were bemused that we got him for £500,000 and they paid £6m for Naismith... ], and if we can replace Murphy with a decent player, hopefully we can really make a push for the play-offs. Have to say I can't give Leon Best the strongest of recommendations, he wasn't great for us in either league and seems to have been plagued by injury since leaving us. He did inspire this excellent video, though! Grant Ward has been looking like an absolute revelation. No club footy for two weeks after this match day We had Leon Best on loan a couple of years back...he was right up there with one of the most dire excuses for a footballer that i've ever seen. I wasn't entirely sure he had seen a football before. As for Saturday's result...the best team won. Newcastle weren't brilliant but they didn't have to be as we had a number of players having off games - Sidwell, Bong, Skalak and Murray were particularly ineffective. I thought the 2nd yellow was harsh on reflection but at full speed you can see why he gave it - sadly it killed the games as a contest. Still, Newcastle were worth the win, two good goals (I hate praising Shelvey, as I have an irrational hatred of him) and completely blunted Knockaert by doubling up on him...which hopefully means he looked terrible and stops Newcastle trying to buy him.

Fair assessment of the game. I'm actually pleased it was one of those where the opposition was having an off day in the sense that over the past five years we've had plenty of scenarios like that and just thrown them away by being blunt going forward. Nice to see we can seal the deal when the opportunity is presented. Sure the reverse fixture at The Amex is going to be a bit tricker. As long as we don't end up coming across you in the cup this year.

Arsenal will do their normal bit and just look for a European spot in the top 4 but even then this year they may finish out of the top four and only have a Europa spot next year. That's when the pressure will be on Wenger and won't keep the Gunner fans off of his back in resigning then I think he will. Interesting at the bottom end and Stoke sitting at the bottom just might see Mark Hughes getting the bullet if they don't improve by Christmas.

Life without football this week has been incredibly boring. Balotelli has gone to Nice on a free. I'm not quite sure how I feel about him. Mostly I feel like he only has himself to blame for squandering so many chances that any other footballer would love to have. How's everyone else feel about him?

Strange guy that one, started off as a young sensation then I think he got stars in his eyes and then just faded away. A very funny and eccentric lifestyle ruined him. He was going well and even playing for Italy but I just don't think he has the temperament for football anymore and will end up in a few years as just another footballer that disappeared from the public gaze and then being found years later working in a supermarket or whatever.

I'm not very optimistic at all. I respect him and there's no doubt he can manage and motivate a team full of big personalities, but I don't think he has the tactical finesse to succeed at a high international level. I don't think we're going to see anything spectacularly bad--certainly I rate him a lot higher than Hodgson--and it's possible that if we manage to get into international tournaments under him we'll make a decent run, but I don't see us winning anything. There were some absolutely glaring and major issues that old Roy failed to address and those permeated our performance at Euro 2016. At the very minimum I'd expect Big Sam to have sorted those out within these initial games.

It's just amazing that England has only ever won a major trophy and that was 50 years ago in the 1966 World Cup yet they are always ranked up there as a top International team. I like Big Sam and I wish him well but over the years after coming back from Australia I began to wonder why.
I blame the FA and the English media really, the FA have never advanced with the times like other nations and whenever a World Cup or European Championship comes up the English media start expecting too much from the players and build them all up as supermen and expect them to lift a trophy, then when it goes all ape they then start blaming the manager or players involved. Plus a lot of the scum press as some people call them start trying to dig up dirt on a player or manager just to sell their papers.
Also, it annoys me whenever a World Cup comes up they keep showing the 1966 World Cup and the "They think it is all over, it is now" commentary bit and shows the match over and over again on tv. It's not sour grapes from me as I live in Scotland and class myself more Scottish than English but my father was English and I was born and lived in England until I was 11 years old then we emigrated to Australia.

Well, although England scraped by in the end that wasn't reassuring at all. Was a dire game to watch.
On the other hand, Scotland up already after ten minutes. Hope they do well!

I saw the second half of the England match and to be honest, I was stretched out on the sofa and dozed off, I only woke up when I heard the commentator yell out England have scored lol.
