I made mine when I was inspired by another large site. They had about 800 members at that time (1300 now), and I wanted to do something like that. Though I felt sometimes things were a little strict. I wanted a place like that, but more lenient. Power was never really a concern of mine. As I started to get members my desires changed. I just wanted to lead a friendly forum where I could meet people of same interests and make friends. I still wanted the lenient thing, but the friendliness seemed to matter more, and here I am, 7 months and 114 members later. I couldn't be much happier with the place. Friendly members, nice members, heck, I've even met my current girlfriend at the forum. That alone makes having the forum and keeping it up worth it. It lead me to the most amazing girl ever.
As for other forums. I like building up my staff ranks, per say. I'm staff at a lot of small forums, plus the aforementioned forum I was inspired by. Most say I make good staff, since I'm good with members, and friendly, and that makes me feel better about myself. Something I've been needing, since I guess it can be said I have no self confidence. xD Helping people out on these forums is always fun, and it can usually lead to a new friend. That doesn't have much to do with being an admin at all, but most members seem to like a friendly admin. If I can be that, the forum could be liked more. Therefore, I'm not only helping myself, but the forum as well.

When I first made my site, I didn't really care whether it stuck out or not. I just wanted to be in control of one. Honestly, I didn't think it would last two months. It did. After that point, I figured, I might want to actually put some effort into my site. Oddly enough, that's when the inactivity happened... Anyway. I wanted to be a mod because of my former site. I saw how everyone loved the admin there, she's so respected. I wanted that. I felt like I just jumped into the middle of a family gathering, uninvited, while I was there. So, in a sense, I "grew up" and "made my own family", so to speak. I love the power, I love my staff asking my approval of stuff, I love being able to tell people that their RPing is horrible, I love making my own plots. It does my ego good Here I am, a year and 9 months later.

I wanted to be an admin simply because I couldn't find active boards on certain things and it got annoying after a while so I decided to make my own and see how it would do.
That and I do love the power afforded, and the pride of being able to say 'This is my board'

Well, when I made my site there weren't many cat RPGs, not even Warriors ones. The only ones that were out there were poorly made, with little effort put into them. I became an admin because I wanted to start a site where you could acutally play as a CAT, rather than all the horse and human RPGS that seemed to exist everywhere. Now, there are lots of cat RPGs, some good and some bad, and I'm still runnin' it After all, Feels good to be incharge

I became the admin to my site because it was very rare that I stumbled upon a good Freema/Doctor Who or David Tennant related forum, therfore I felt that something needed to be done about it. I know that there are many fans out there, who are not willing to come forward, but at least they know that there's a great forum there for them to discuss their favouraite actor/actress.
Also too many a times I've seen one or two admins mess things up, by not being on their site regulally and letting members get away with the most stupid of things, which I don't think is fair at all.

My whole forum was a complete accident, lol. I'd registered it to try and find out how skins were made, because I was trying to help the admin of another forum. He never got around to contacting me about actually making any skins, so I thought, "I've got this forum, I might as well use it for something."
I'd just got really into online roleplaying at the time, and previously myself and my now members, had only had sub-sections of other forums to play on. So I knocked out a quick banner and skin, and grabbed my now co-admin and said "Hey, y'know that RP I'm about to be running? How about doing it here?" So, between that and a revived RP of his, we got a good member-base straight off the bat, and two years on we're all starting to get properly settled, get skins going etc.
I don't know how it worked so well, I guess, it's hard for newbies to get really into things, since we run small RPs with limited entry, a thing we're not sure how to rectify even to this day. But we have a lot of variety in terms of the genres and fandoms we RP within, which is nice for people who don't like to be tied to one character or world. We've had lulls in posting as people get loads of school work piled on them and surges as they finish, and drama that would normally have been the death of the forum, lol.
But we're still going, and we're looking to for a while yet *fingers crossed.*
I guess, I like being surrounded by people who respect my opinions even when they don't agree, and people who post in a mature manner. A lot of forums I've been on were chat speak-filled and clique-y. I got sick of the private chat threads on public forums, roleplay posts written by godmodders who thought they were the main character, and roleplay posts "riten liek dis!!!". (I know that some people just aren't good at English, and I'm happy to proof read for players who aren't sure, because it's so vital, in an RP, that you can understand what's going on, and how the players are responding to it.)
So I wanted to have a place that was... for people like me, I guess. I don't find a lot of roleplay forums for people in my age range, and when I do, they tend to be all about the shipping, not the story, and not very welcoming of fan-characters, and limited to one fandom. (I know that not all of them are like this, this is just my experience). Our goal is to tell a good story, have a laugh, and occasionally, pull a really surprising twist on the players.

Honestly? I don't.
I preffer being mod/Global mod over admin, as there really isn't that much pressure to take care of every single little problem. Don't get me wrong, I can handle it, but it gets a bit stressful. I would choose mod/global mod over admin anyday.

Don't get me wrong, I can handle it, but it gets a bit stressful. I would choose mod/global mod over admin anyday. I have to agree. I like being able to be a reference point for members and to help the admin when necessary, but I am not one for making the major changes like codes, advertising, etc. I do what I can to help on the site and bring members to it, but I don't like the feeling of pressure that seems to be inherent for most admins. It does not encourage me to start my own forum. Granted, I have been given two in my time and that is bad enough. One has gone great; the other one I could use some help, but no members want to take on the role of helping...which is their choice, but it is still somewhat sad.

okay i gmod a gossipgirl forum and i headmod a one tree hill forum.on the oth forum im the mod that does just about everything and the forum is still small so its fun and i dont mind. im the go-to person.but the sites rules are so relaxed that sometimes i find myself debating on whether i should do something or not. on the gg forum ive been there since the beg and the owner and i were gd friends before and its fun.i love it . but one oth forum im a member of is really strict-i got banned for 2 wks for posting in the wrong sect-NO WARNING.
then after a while i was looking for a gilmore girls forum and couldnt find one i liked. so i asked a diff forum buddy to start it with me.the forum is really new-not even a week old-and its fun to make the exec decisions and make it more fun and things i wished other forums had but combined into one. its not the power i care about its the forum and the members

I joined a new forum and being as it was new, and the owner was looking for staff, I got to be moderator. The forum grew, the mods gelled as a team, but the admin-owner deleted the forum (long story). We missed the forum, we wanted to create another to replace it and invite all the old members, a couple of us were willing to create and run it, so in the end it turned out to be me, with the other as main mod. we got the old members back, and the old mods team, and it's going really well

I like to play online adaptations of Survivor games and that led to hosting the games. However, the board I played and hosted at was targeted towards only Survivor games. I started my own board to host a variety of different games at my own discretion.
I have since opened my board to also letting established members host their own games there, too and a few have complete freedom to start games as they want and generally have full power at the board, as well. These are members who have shown good judgment and have popular games with the members.

I began making my own forums when I was sick of non-active admins, poor staff quality, and just the basic laziness that usually happens after some time. I wanted to have that security that if I put so much time and energy into a site that it wouldn't one day just be dead; as which happens so often. I like being the active, fun, and friendly admin that is keeping my site alive.

I became admin partially by accident, and partially because I knew I could do better than the sites I was on. I hated that the sites had broken images, or disorganization, or just plain didn't flow. Hence my admininiation (try saying that 10 times fast, haha) I still hold some mod positions on a smattering of sites, but that's mostly because the reasons above...I just can't stand not helping where I can.
