I made my forum because I was sick and tired of people shutting theirs down without notifying me, or telling me I'm doing something wrong when they let somebody do that same something without them getting in trouble. I also wanted to be in control of a site and make sure I had it how I like it, not how somebody else did. I wanted my site to be different from everyone elses.

I wanted to be the admin of one of my forums because I had an amazing idea that I'd never seen before, and I thought I could do it well. No one joined, though I thought it was good-all the right stuff and the colors were nice-so I rejected it.
However, on another forum, I was once a member and was promoted to staff by the admin. I found that I could improve a lot about it, and so I gradually made my way up, and now I'm the co-admin. I wanted to be the admin because I wanted to help the site.

This is something similar to my thread on being an admin or a regular member. What I want to know is what has made you want to be the admin of your forum instead of just joining an already established forum and helping them to be successful? I still see new Harry Potter forums being opened daily along with LOTR and many others where there are already hundreds of forums that exist with the same topic. Do you feel you can create a better forum than the other people who already have one? If so then why do I see so many people in GOAYB coming in asking for rates with default or single color forums and no other customizations and saying they have the best looking forum ever and everyone needs to come check it out. What makes these people want to create a forum if they are not going to put the effort into it to customize it and provide content for their members. They want their members to do all the work for them while they just sit back and say they have made an awesome forum. So really, what made you want to become the admin of your own forum and has it worked out for you? Myself I have always had forums that were on topics that there were not many other boards about and those boards that were around I did not much like the design, activity, and overall feel of the forum myself so I created my own in efforts to have a large thriving community that would be of help to others. I take pride in being an admin and providing someone with a community they can be proud of and they want to return to to chat with others. I made a forum, not just to be admin, to help give insite and other stuff. I run a sports site, so need my site constantly updated, posting new information. I check ESPN every morining for info I should post.

I knew a lot about one particular topic in which a few thousand others also shared interest & I wanted to see that those members received the very best.

I started both my sites because I couldn't find sites that stayed open for more than a month or had an interesting plot. For example, I started a harry potter marauder's era site because most of the sites that I've seen actually concentrate on the marauders and their time at Hogwarts. When I created my site, I hadn't see a marauder's era site that concentrated equally on the adults and students of that time period, as well as how the rise of voldie was affecting everybody.
For my clique site, I believe that my site is the only one of two left from the clique craze. There was this time where there were thousands of sites based on the clique series, but since then, the numbers have dwindled down to four. Reccently, two of the largest sites was changed: one was shut down for good while the other one had a plot change and now has nothing to do with the books. Now, I believe my site is the largest one for the clique rp, the other site only having three members, including myself.

I have not created my own Harry Potter forums because there are so many out there. I have found a good one that has been open for 5 years now, so I'm sticking with that.
When I get an idea for a site that isn't as popular as Harry Potter or LOTR, then that is when I want to be an admin and create my own site.
In my opinion, if there are a lot of forums like the one your creating, it will be more difficult to get people to join, when they might already be a member on a site like that already.

I wanted to be an admin because I am a control freak, and as an admin, I can control everything . I still join many other boards, but i prefer my own as i can make my own twists on plots and rules and basicaly make all the decisions. Also, many of the boards I join fail to meet my full requirements, or i cannot find one that i want. Erego, i just make my own and allow other people to join .

Hia good question, I created my forum because ever since i started using forums, i saw it and thought "one day i'll make one" when i found this site i thought there was a great oppurtunity their for me. Being an Admin hasn't always been my intention originnally i wanted to moderate on boards somebody else created, when i realised that I could choose the topics, categories and all that through being an Admin i grabbed the oppurtunity with 10 fingers and got to work on it. I know my forum isn't the best, never will be the best. But something drove me to make it. Maybe it was one or all of the following, I wanted Control I wanted the experience I wanted my own site but am rubbis at creating them, and a message board was my oppurtunity. ProBoards gave me the perfect oppurtunity.
I don't really care about my member count, as long as i have a community. Which i'm finding difficult at the moment. I was sick of boards that just discriminated members, my board wasn't going to reach that stage of unfairity. I have a dream for my board, that dream cannot be reached through sitting back and making jo average a Mod or Admin. I've decided that i'm running it and if mods are selected they will have used my board for a long enough time to prove they are commited. Matty

Interesting topic and question.
I don't mind not being a admin of my own forum and have come close to letting people take over for me a few times.
I have two forums, why I'm admin of the first one is because there were a group of us posting our stories on a already established forum, but the rules changed so we couldn't post are fanfics anymore, with me being the only one in the bunch with the know how to create us a new home, I became admin.
The second one, I was a part of a already established Harry Potter roleplaying forum which was very successful for years, but it had to close down and never reopened. I didn't want to join another established related forum because I wanted to roleplay with the same people, so I created a new forum and invited everyone over.
I still see new Harry Potter forums being opened daily along with LOTR and many others where there are already hundreds of forums that exist with the same topic. Do you feel you can create a better forum than the other people who already have one? - No, I don't feel I can create a better place, but that's not why I created my HP forum. I created it for a bunch of friends that roleplayed together for years and couldn't anymore.
So really, what made you want to become the admin of your own forum and has it worked out for you? - I didn't want to really be a admin haha, I was kind of the only one able to be a admin in both areas. I have trained/taught people how to run the first forum since it started back in 2006 tho, and have thought about letting someone else run it. But I feel very protective of the place, so don't think I can stand down as admin.
Yes it has worked for me! ;D

I made my Support forum for people who needed help with mental health, i was a few before i made mine. I found a lot of admin was controlling and wasnt supporting the members. Also cloing down the forum was a major pain, and very unhelpful. So i made mine, where people can get help and hopefully start to heal

The board I'm admin of wasn't created by me I more like "earned" the admin spot. It was late in the spring time (if i'm correct) and I joined the site inthe summer (I'm talking about last year). I was an active member there logging in everyday and constantly posting, I talked to almost every member there and always gave feedback and input and before I knew it I became an Moderator, As an moderator I started to advertise the site more, talk and get to know more members, welcome newbies and manage the site with the limited powers I had, basically tried my best to help the admin of the site and she noticed that too so she promoted me to a global mod. I pretty much did all the same things as a GM but I had more powers now and I didn't put them to waste. Then it happened the reason of the downfall of the site: Drama. Since I'm too lazy to write it I'll just said it included secrets, back stabbing and most of all favouritism. Some of the staff members and members arguing, pointing fingers and confessing things the admin says she's going to delete the site. But eventually came to her senses and instead of deleting the site she left forum giving the password of the site admin account to 2 of her trusted members. (And no the other one wasn't me which surprised some people). So what we did with the remaining staff members and a few members (Some staff members and members left because of the drama) was make a thread for our rebirth where we discussed changes, improvements & etc. Anyway one of them involved choosing 3 new admins (The two earlier admins we had left the forum). There were 5 nominees. 2 of the staff members got most of the votes so they were automatically picked as staff members. Then there was a 3-way tie with the remaining 3 staff members (I was one of them) and sice we already had 2 admins they decided together I should be the 3rd admin. I agreed and that's how I became the admin sadly one of our other admins left weeks later which brings our forum to 2 admins. Anyway I had never thought of become an admin of a forum, the chance just came because people believed in me and I took it

I am an admin because I wanted to make a role play custom molded to the world I thought up in my head. It was a bit of an experimant, but I wanted to see if others would take to my ideas as much as I did. Also, I enjoy coding and making new skins for my forum. I feel that bein an admin is a great responsibility and brings me much satisfaction when I see others enjoying my site.

The adminis. is my friend at school...actually... ^^"
Yes, I know, what I just said is usually never a good thing to do.
I don't think I'm a bad admin. I'm on everyday, pretty much all day, try to be friendly with all the members, 'specially if they just joined 2 minutes ago (=P), don't go around using my admin powers to mess with the forum without telling/asking the head what I'm about to do/if I can do this (unless it's something she asked me to do, and what action I'm about to take is for that request)...
Yes, it's a bit if a pressure-builder, 'specially since we're new and need buttons, skins, banners, etc., but it's nice to know I can help~

OMGZ, I love this topic. I think people want to be administrators because they want that "power". I mean everybody knows most people who apply for staff on your site has never done something like this before. Being an administrator is like being a manager. Basically making it a job. Most of the time I see staff sitting around doing nothing, being lazy, and chatting in their c-box. Shame on them.
But with out of the way I say my reason for wanting to be administrator is to share my ideas with everybody on my forum. To create a fun environment; a community where people who like the same thing can gather without the worry of stereotypes. I treat my position like a job, meaning i get it done when it has to be done. Yeah, I have break shifts, but I don't get carried away. I mean we are all human, we do have real life outside of this (believe in or not).
