We don't have an introduction board per se, but I have PMed every new member once they come to the site to let them know about who the admins are and what they can expect and the like. And usually every couple of months, an update is sent out to let people know about new members or new additions and the like. I don't like clutter in my inbox, so I try and keep it out of other inboxes too...be it real email or PM.

I don't email my members too often. I havn't got many members yet as my site is fairly new. I send new members a welcome PM after they have been sorted (I run a Harry Potter rp site) and I basicly say welcome to the site. I also give them the password. If I go into maintenance mode, I will usually send a mass email afterwards just to let people know that the site is accessible again. I try to restrain from sending heaps of mass PMs and emails though.

As well as communication by posting (picking up on people's interests) talking to people through PM to get to know them can make people feel welcome. I don't welcome members when they join as some do (& find equally as effective) but I try to do something for them that's special. Sounds corny, but sometimes a 'listening ear' can gain friendship for life!

Every few months (not very often), usually when I'm bored, I send a mass email out reminding members we're still up. I put the link in 'cause people often forget the link. Instead of mass PM, I usually create an annoucement. Although I sometimes send a mass PM if it;s an "emergency" and people might get panicky before seeing the annoucement, such as when I was moving all the boards around. lol

I think these ideas are very ideal. That way, admins of each of the forums can have happy members.I had 1 member at my forum that just PMed me as soon as he joined.Eventually,he made a few posts.lol
Sending mass PMs,or E-Mails aren't that ideal.A chatbox can also be considered like those.

This idea, while handy at times, can be seen as spamming to some members, so we have moved away from it a little more. Instead we are doing an Adopt-A-NonPoster sort of idea where each active member takes a non-active member and emails them. It is more personal and a little more community-oriented.

Sometimes, I PM a random member who's on a lot but doesn't post. (a lurker I believe theyre called), just ask them how they're doing, and then have a conversation or somehting, usually they post soon after I PM them

i have the pm system for anouncements that aren't important to put on the announcement board, or i use what i call a messenger room board, i give two people the pw, they talk to each other and have a interview, i watch to make sure nothing wrong is happening, and when they are done, i change the pw. I also have things i only tell my admins, that way the whole board doesn't know all the secrets, like all the hidden boards, surprises, etc.

My forum is used for a non profit organization in South Central KY. It's used for people to get together and help out families who are less fortunate and things like that. It's also used to help people get rid of items that they no longer need, and helping them get to someone that can use them, rather than the items going to a local landfill. We send out mass emails and PM's when we do a food drive or we have a get-together to raise money for the less fortunate families.

I prefer to send out something similar to a news letter, just reminding the members that we're here, whats going on etc etc but thats not a lot, maybe every 4 months or so. I'll mass PM if a new competition's on, or I really want them to know something, but usually I'll put a sticky thread up in the Announcments or something.

I like having the ability to send mass emails and PMs. The mass PMing is used two or three times a month as we have contests for the members and staff. We let all of the members vote for who they think should win and we send out PMs to let them know polls are up and they can vote. So it is very useful.
