Gameplay and Rules(Made by bagheera of ProBoards Support; developed and edited by Phaelyn and Syko for use on Board404 (and then further revised by Syko for use on PBS once again))
Welcome to the sixth game of
Mafia!
For those unfamiliar with the game, the Wikipedia link above should help you to understand how the game works. Because this game only features ten players, it will be considerably less complex than the previous games you may have seen on ProBoards Support. A simple explanation of the game is provided below.
OverviewAt the beginning of the game, roles are assigned: Two Mafia members and eight villagers. Among these eight villagers, two are assigned special roles, the doctor and the detective (more on them later). The two Mafia members talk privately; they know who is Mafia and who is not, although they do not know who the doctor and the detective are. The villagers do not know anyone's alignment other than their own.
The game consists of Night phases and Day phases and begins with Night 1. During the Night phases, the Mafia members discuss amongst themselves who they would like to kill. The name of their target is sent privately to the narrator. Meanwhile, the doctor chooses somebody to save. If the Mafia and the doctor both choose the same person, that person is saved and nobody dies during the night; otherwise, the Mafia's target dies, and the death is announced at the beginning of the next day. In addition to these roles, there is also a detective. The detective can PM the narrator the name of one player per Night and will discover whether this player is a Mafia member or not. This information is not made public; it's up to the detective to decide how (and if) they choose to communicate this information to the public. Once all the special roles have contacted the narrator, the Night phase ends and the Day phase begins.
During the Day phases, all players decide on someone to lynch. This is done through a majority vote (see specific rules regarding the majority vote in the "Day phase" section below). The players can also choose not to lynch anyone. After a majority has been reached, the chosen player is lynched and their alignment is revealed. The goal of the villagers during this phase is to lynch a Mafia member; the goal of the Mafia is to trick the villagers into lynching one of their own. After the lynch (or no lynch) occurs, the Day phase ends and the Night phase begins once again.
Once killed, a player is no longer allowed to communicate with surviving players in the context of the game or share any information related to gameplay in the thread. (Dead players are allowed to communicate with other dead members, so long as they don't share any information with players who are still in the game.)
Win condition: The Mafia wins the game if the number of surviving non-Mafia villagers equals the number of surviving Mafia members. For example, if there are 3 villagers and 2 Mafia members alive at a given point in time, the Mafia will win if one of the three villagers dies next. However, the villagers would win if both Mafia members are killed before this condition occurs.
SpecificsI will send special role notifications that inform players of their role in the game. All players, including normal villagers without special roles, will receive a role PM. All roles have been chosen randomly using
the List Randomizer from random.org.
The first night phase will begin immediately. Once that has finished, it will switch to day; once a lynching (or none) has been performed, it immediately transitions back to night, and so on.
Night Phase:--The narrator will post to recap the day's lynching, if any, and announce that it is night-time, then PM special roles with instructions.
--Villagers cannot discuss the next day or theories in this thread. Sleepy time.
--Two Mafia members will chat via PM, IM, or any other method they choose, selecting a villager to kill. Once they unanimously choose a target, they will notify me.
--One detective will PM me with the name of the player they wish to investigate, and I will respond to tell them if that individual is a Mafia member or a non-Mafia villager.
--One doctor will PM me with the name of the player they wish to protect from a Mafia killing that night only. The doctor may choose to save the same player multiple nights in a row. They may also choose to save themselves.
--If the Mafia and the doctor choose the same person, nobody dies that night. If they don't, I'll post about the death, and the game will move to the next day phase.
Day Phase:--All players still alive will decide which one player to lynch on suspicion of being in the Mafia.
--Communication by players still alive is allowed during this phase, privately or in public on the thread.
--When you decide on your final vote, post the name of that player in the thread (along with any justification, etc, you wish). Please post it in
bold so I see it. If you want to retract or change your vote, please also post it in
bold. (If it's not in bold and the thread explodes overnight -- not bloody likely -- I can't guarantee I'll catch it.)
--Vote retraction is allowed as long as the player you're voting for doesn't have over 50% of the votes.
--Once a 50%+ majority has been attained, that player is immediately killed and vote retraction is no longer allowed. (If you prefer, think of it this way: once the mob reaches that fury of over 50% crying for a lynching, there's no stopping the blind, blood-fueled rage from filling you.) If I'm not online, the player is still killed and it is effectively nighttime.
--A player who has just been lynched is allowed one simple, sad "bah" post immediately, with no extra gameplay content, hints, pleas, threats, oaths, etc. After that, you're not allowed to post here or PM hints, etc. to players still in the game.
--Once the lynching occurs, it immediately transitions to night again.
In both phases, I will generally stay out of it except when I feel a crucial rules clarification needs to be made, to answer questions posted publicly that won't ruin gameplay, to make judgment calls about rules if absolutely necessary (unlikely, though), and to make narrative death posts. I'm probably lurking and always available by PM, though.
Time Limits:--During the day phase, the villagers have
24 48 hours from the time that Day Time is declared to reach a majority. If no majority vote is reached within 24 hours, there will be no lynching at all, and the game will move into the next night immediately.
--Players may also choose to vote for "No Lynch" in lieu of voting for somebody to lynch. If the "No Lynch" votes attain a 50%+ majority, the day will immediately end and no lynching will occur that day.
--During the night phase, a time limit of 48 hours will be imposed. This time limit applies to the Mafia members, the detective, and the doctor. If any of these roles do not communicate the person they wish to kill/investigate/save to the narrator within the time limit, their powers will be nullified for the night and the game will proceed into the Day phase without them.
Additional rules and clarifications:--Screenshots and videos are not allowed.
--Suicides are not allowed, in light of the small number of players in this game. If you have a special role and no longer wish to play, please inform me of this and I will end the night phases without expecting a PM from you.
--If you still have questions about your role, gameplay, etc, you can always PM me.
Have fun lying and lynching! ;D
