Is there a way to assign NPCs to specific users without having to make a group for each and every member who uses an NPC? I have a roleplay forum and this will be wonderful if I can do that, instead of having hundreds of NPCs able to be controlled by everyone.

A previously suggested method that works well - create a member group for each NPC, then just add each member to that group who can use that NPC. For example, if I had an NPC named Merlin, I would create a member group ( Admin > Members > Member Groups) named Merlin. Then, when someone can use that NPC, I just add them to the Merlin Member Group.

The problem is that each individual member would have their own list of NPCs that would ONLY be able to be used by them. That is what I am asking about. Not how to assign multiple users to a single NPC, but to assign multiple NPCs to a single user without having to create a group for each and every member.

Not how to assign multiple users to a single NPC, but to assign multiple NPCs to a single user without having to create a group for each and every member. The solution Lynx referred you to solves that problem and makes NPCs work exactly how you're describing it now. Don't create a group for every user. Create a hidden group for every NPC. You can then go to the Groups tab of a user's profile and assign multiple NPCs to that user. This keeps the number of groups you need to create at a fixed number instead of having to create a new group for every new user you want to have access to specific NPCs. You also get the added bonus of being able to click on that NPC's group and get a list of all the users who have access to it.

Since each user will have multiple NPCs that would make more work than making a group for each user. So I am assuming there is not an option in the plug-in for what I am saying? Being able to assign an NPC to an individual user would be much better for me than assigning a group to an NPC. So many fewer steps to take.

Being able to assign an NPC to an individual user would be much better for me than assigning a group to an NPC. So many fewer steps to take. I think I need to show you an example of what we're explaining. Trust me when I say the method we're proposing is much easier. In the example below I have 3 NPCs: Brian, Michael, and Scott. To set up the permissions for each of these NPCs all I have to do is go into Members > Member Groups and create one hidden group per NPC. I never have to create another member group again after this point unless I create a new NPC. Once those groups are created I can assign those as the only required groups to use those NPCs in the plugin's settings. Just like with the Member Groups page I will never have to visit the plugin's settings again after this unless I want to create a new NPC. Finally, to grant a user permission to use that NPC all I'd have to do is visit their profile, open the Groups tab, then add them to whichever groups represent the NPC I'm granting them access to. And boom, done. You can add users to multiple groups at once so there's no need to make a group for every individual user who needs NPC access.

I understand what you are saying about that, but the way my forum runs is that i would be making *fewer* groups if i assigned one group to each player instead of to each NPC, since each player can have up to 6 unique NPC characters. So if I have 3 players, i would either make 3 groups, one for each player, or i could make 18 groups, one for each NPC.
EDIT I figured out how to alter the plug-in to accept an individual member as a permission instead of a group ^-^ thanks for trying to help!

Hello,
I was wondering, is there a way to make some changes to these profiles to show information other than gender, birthday, and location, or are they hardcoded for at least part of it? I was able to make enough changes to show other information, but it appeared to be set in the NPC List, so I wasn't sure what information would be changing, and if I needed to add new things that would be rough.
Also, assuming this can be done, will this be able to be shown properly if other templates are being used, using the replacements you have listed?
Thanks for the help, Ataro

Thanks for the help, Ataro They're hard-coded, but since the source code of the plugin is editable you can easily change that. I highly recommend reading over the steps in this post if you're interested in adding more fields: support.proboards.com/post/6834223Plugins run on all themes so provided the NPC Profiles plugin already works on another theme adding more fields to it should also work on that theme.

So, I am the only one (as the admin) who can choose to post as an NPC. My staff cannot. Everything is set to the right settings and theyre assigned the NPCs, but nothing shows up on their posting form.

I am not asking about modifications. No one except for me can see the drop-down menu to choose an NPC. I can choose one for them on their posts, but they cannot.

I am not asking about modifications. No one except for me can see the drop-down menu to choose an NPC. I can choose one for them on their posts, but they cannot. The reason it's malfunctioning that way is because of the modification you made to it. Changing the search type to a user search is not enough to make the plugin work the way you mentioned earlier. That only changes what numerical IDs are inserted into the plugin's source code. That doesn't change what the source code does with the IDs. The plugin is now going through the list of groups those users are assigned to and trying to test their user IDs against their group IDs which will fail because they're highly likely to be different due to being two different types of data. I can provide support for my own code because if something malfunctions the implication is that I may have coded something wrong or in a way that doesn't account for a certain combination of settings in the vanilla plugin, but I can't provide support for modified versions of the plugin because that constitutes debugging someone else's code that I didn't create.

I suppose then that this plug-in is not what I need. If I cannot assign characters to players individually, then it will be way too much work and too much data stored. Oh well.

I still think the way we suggested using it is incredibly easy (and again, allows you to assign characters to players individually—the only difference is you're doing so from their Groups page and not the plugin settings), but to each their own. I would suggest at least giving that method a try before dismissing the plugin completely.
