I would like people to be able to read the forum without creating an account and logging in. To reply or post, they would, of course, need to do so. I want them to be able to go straight to the forum and see all the topics/categories. At the moment, it goes straight to a registration button. People don't know exactly what they are signing up for. I advertise on GAB and people are skeptical.

paulajedi , I assume you want visitors to see the content but not participate unless they register, correct? Disable the Guest Must Login splash screen (Admin > Settings > Forum Settings > Login & Registration tab). Then go to Admin > Structure > Categories & Boards. For each of the boards, edit the board properties going to the Permissions tab: For the first two permissions of view and access leave them set to "Everyone". For the rest ( create threads, reply to threads, create polls) set those to "Members & Staff" Of course if there's a particular board (or boards) where you do not want member access or participation, you can adjust the permissions accordingly. You may wish to read through our Help Guide articles Understanding Board Permissions and Forum Content Visibility and Participation GuidePlease let us know if you have any questions.
There's no need for a plugin as it's already able to be done.
