Forum URL: (private) Hi all, new to making forums, and I have a question or 2 about members and identifying/searchable info for users. I'm making a forum for my language school, so that students can make an account and get information and help each other. The problem is, my boss wants to the students to be able to make their display names/usernames not their real names. This would be fine, but if a student quits the school, we want to be able to delete them from the member list. And then we can't see anyway of finding that student's account. Only display names and usernames are showing up on the members list, and we can't search for members via email, unless we click through to each profile. Is there any work around for this? Thanks in advance.

Hi You can make a modification to have the email addresses show in the members list. Although you wouldn't be able to search the list, you will at least have them listed instead of having to click through in to each individual profile. support.proboards.com/post/7089288Another thing you may consider is to have each member send a private message to the main admin account with their real name as the subject. This will allow you to search your PMs for the name and as it has been sent from the account associated with that name, you can easily find the account you want to delete. Craig

Thanks for the reply. The first option will be great for my needs currently. However I do think an email address search function should be added. It would be relatively easy and useful to do too I imagine. Thanks again for the reply.

Sorry, as a follow up. How do I as the admin access the members list, without it being visible to all members? I want it set up so that only the admin team can see the members list. If I go into the settings and remove "members" from view, I can no longer find the members list, even under the admin header. Where is it?

You can still access it by adding /members to your forum URL. Please note that other members will still be able to access the list this way. If you were worried about other members seeing the email addresses, the code in that post i linked you to will only show the email addresses to the main admin, and no one else. I agree about the ability for staff to search for accounts. I am hoping this is added back at some stage as it was previously possible

Is there a way to use a custom title to be able to search for members in the members list? Can that custom title be added as a column in the members list? Either to search in the search box, or using ctrl F.
Or is it possible for members to change their registered email addresses?

eieigo - It is possible for a member to change the email address associated with their account. They can do this by going to their Profile > Edit Profile > Personal tab. Under the email listing is an "Edit" link. Clicking that takes them to their main global account settings page where they can change the email address used. A column for custom titles can be added to the members list in the same fashion as adding an email address column. However that also would not be searchable using the forum's search feature. Note that if adding either email or custom title column to the list, it would be searchable using the browser's search (control+F) - but it would only find instances on that page. If the members list has multiple pages, the browser search would need to be performed for each page. This is due to the fact that all pages are not loaded at once into the browser, so the browser only has the information that is displayed on that page available for searching.

And thank you for the information. Good news on the email address changing. In that case, it's not so necessary for the custom title, however, just in case, would you be able to walk me through the process of adding that in to the members list. I tried it myself, adding in some code in a way I thought would work, but nothing change. I guess it's adding in something like class="custom title" [user.customtitle] in some capacity, right? I just don't the exact language needed and the exact location into the code. Sorry for the hassle, and thanks for the help.

Go to Admin > Structure > Layout Templates. For each template page there are certain variables that can be used. Not all variables can be used on all pages. When viewing a layout template page, on the right side is a column for Loops and Variables which shows what's available for that template. The variable you would want to use is: $[user.custom_title]

Thanks for the reply, I'm not sure where I need to put that code. Do I need to put it in the members layout or the members list layout? or both? And is it just word for word what you wrote? or is it this?
<td class="custom title">$[user.custom_title]</td>
EDIT: I've done it. It doesn't have a column header, but it shows the custom title so that'll be fine. Thanks for the help!
EDIT 2: fixed that ^ now too.

Sorry, I have a follow up to this. It's come to our attention that when we set this up, the users can click other members' profiles and see all those custom titles. We don't want that to be visible to other users. We just want it to be available to the admin/members list page. Is there a way of editing that in? We'd also like to edit out the email addresses on people's profiles so that they aren't viewable to other users.

Change the above to: {if $[current_user.is_staff]}<td class="custom title">$[user.custom_title]</td>{/if} Note that this will hide it from the user to whom the custom title belongs, and make it JUST anyone whose member group is considered 'staff' in the admin panel settings.

Sorry I've managed to remove emails, that's great. But I'm having a hard time remove the custom title from the little profiles on the actual user's posts. I thought I got rid of it, and I have on the mobile version of the site, but when I change it to desktop version I can still see the custom name, but it's been slightly shunted out of the mini/micro profile box on the right. It appears just to the right of that for some reason. I've looked through the code and can't seem to see a place to change that. Sorry for the hassle.

Unfortunately I can't see your site so I don't know how to guide you further. But it sounds like you're not editing the correct things, and you're winding up editing too much / not enough as the code isn't correctly parsing. I'd be happy to help if you want to provide a URL, but if not a PB admin will have to take a peek during business hours tomorrow (9am to 5pm pacific/-8 gmt)
