Is this some stupid USA data requirement ? Seems a wee bit politically correct to me ^^ What does being from the USA have to do with it? Its the USA law that governs requirements like age declarations etc.

What does being from the USA have to do with it? Its the USA law that governs requirements like age declarations etc. You need to actually read what Craig posted, to understand why they put it in. This has nothing to do with the government.

The question doesn't lie in what you see yourself as, or what you affiliate with most, but what you physically are - and there's no arguing that. From wikipedia, because it's quick to pull up for reference for what I'm trying to get at. "Intersexuality is the term adopted by medicine during the 20th century applied to human beings who cannot be classified as either male or female" Source"The terms hermaphrodite and pseudohermaphrodite, introduced in the 19th century, are now considered problematic as hermaphrodism refers to people who are both completely male and completely female, something not possible." SourceI am saying that some people cannot, will not, or have trouble deciding their gender, and FORCING this decision from TWO choices is where the problem lies. If these gender choices will determine seeing "his" and "her" friendly tags added to stuff in our profile or about our messages and posts, you are still forcing that gender on someone who does not associate with it. One can have both parts and associate with male, but because that person has less body hair and more traits of a female, your logic would force that person to say that their gender is "female" and female phrases will be used to define their posts. I'm sorry, but their "gender" choice affects their "affiliated" choice and are in and of the same. If you specified male or female, and the "friendly" tags are not added and they remain "view member's last post" or "posts by member" ... this is still better (which the "undisclosed" part would accomplish). However, because the gender is still forced onto the user as TWO choices, they still have to pick male or female. I am glad that the option to hide this information is available, but I still do not agree with forcing the user to make the decision of male or female. If hiding it will show the gender neutral phrases, why not just add "undisclosed" or "not specified" to the dropdown list, since it does the same thing?

Well the only thing my members wanted to know was why Alien isn't an option. I don't think they are too worried about it. I believe they thought it was a glitch.

Legal documents have no 'undisclosed' option - you are either genetically male, or genetically female.

I find this whole new code thing to be a waste of time and an irritant. I do not understand how this is supposed to make the system seem more 'friendly' as it is such a small change, I seriously doubt anyone new to a Proboard would notice. Adding the 'hide' feature is nice, but it is as if you haven't changed anything. Why did you bother at all with this new code? Which translates into my mind as a bunch of people doing nothing productive with a silly idea. Said time wasting and silly ideas tick off people like me, thus this stupid discussion, which equals more time wasting for, what I see as, a moronic idea...
Surely there is something you people could be doing that is better than this...

I mean your gender is something anyone who goes around you will see, what's so bad about giving it out online? Honestly, you can't be hacked or stalked because you're female or male.

And to be fair, if you are an admin you take longer creating boards and skins why are you fussing over a tiny thing that is there to make it better and more professional? If you are a member, it will take less time to change than a post complaining about it so your wasting no time but your own when you could be changing your valuble gender settings. Also, the staff a very busy with things all the time, Craig spends most of his time on in the support board, god, he doesn't even know what sunshine is. Give the guys a break, yeah?

Surely there is something you people could be doing that is better than this... While I can appreciate the sarcasm, we do a lot of work to provide this free service for our members, including active development on Version 5. If you want to learn what improvements we're dedicating our time to please check out the PB blog.

I am not getting at the gender thing, though. I don't really mind that. The uselessness of the whole thing bothers me, hinst my last statement of the first post.

Surely there is something you people could be doing that is better than this... If it hasn't really changed anything then why complain? ProBoards is trying to become more elegant in their next version of code. That requires that they collect more information to better personalize it to the user. Personalization is a great, great thing for software - it makes the user feel more at home. I think they have been more than accommodating too, adding an option to hide it and then deal with all of you. It's really a non issue because you can hide it just as easily as you can not select it at all. So for a couple extra clicks you could have saved yourselves all kinds of time coming here. Just hide it if you don't want it displayed.
