Hi Craig,
I would like to publicly identify as a third gender on the forum I frequent.
I have selected my biological sex and chosen to hide it, but I would much rather choose my gender association. Is it possible to accomodate for this? It's quite common to identify as a 3rd gender in some cultures and communities, and as I'm sure you've seen from other posts, the term 'gender' is defined in a way that is unrelated to 'sex'.
Thank you for considering my query. I much appreciate it.

Hi, The need to add your gender has been added for a number of reasons. In the main, it's in preparation for our next version, where we, and you can customise messages gender specifically. For example, we can have a message, say, in my profile, it can say view his most recent posts instead of the view recent posts by this member. The former, i'm sure you will agree, is more 'friendlier'. Craig So if folks can see messages with "his" or "her" in them in a profile won't that defeat the purpose of being able to hide your gender regardless?? Many people are very uncomfortable giving a gender online, whether to avoid being hassled or stalked, or if there isn't simply a m/f answer that fits them. If you can create two options, you can certainly create three - and give folks a "neutral" choice that leaves the messages as is. As far as being friendlier - it's not. Part of the beauty of internet anonymity is that you can associate, correspond, and interact with others based on common interests regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, age, religion, language, abilities/disabilities, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, or geographic location. Individuals can be judged by their actions and not by being pigeon-holed into categories that do not define who they are as a person. Just my two pennies.

1. Where it's true that you can't please everyone, you can please more people if you give them choice to opt out of being forced to make choices (male/female, hide/show) if they did not wish to - because of the mere act of being forced (answer the questions or have no more access to the forum!!! Ha! You can't get out of this!!!) or because neither gender suits them for whatever reason.
2. There is already the option of defining your gender in your profile along with the option to leave it blank. I can see why some may wonder why the 'personalisation' with the 'his/her/their' wording could not be implemented using info already voluntarily offered by users currently, thus coming to the conclusion that it is doubled-up coding/unnecessary.

Oh Gawd. WHY DO YOU PEOPLE POUT SO MUCH! It is as simple as clicking the option to hide your gender! All they did was update the gender code that is common throughout the forum world! Now, you people whine because you don't want to fill one tiny extra required option! I don't see this as invasive, purely on the fact that I have been on forums that doesnt even have a gender option, and everyone assumes you are a specific sex, on the reason of how you post or what they think males or females should post. This is a great thing!
Now stop having a pity party, and GET ON WITH LIFE!

what's the big deal? It's such a small thing to be worried about. It's not like they are asking for pictures of your private parts to prove it. Pick what you want to be known as or click hide and move on. this is a very minor detail.

Thank you for considering my query. I much appreciate it. There was a code to do that, I used one to add trangender, genderqueer, and gender neutral to my board and told the members to tell me if they wanted anything else but now the whole thing is kinda glitching because of this. In fact, my avatar is the little image I made for the gender neutral selection. The code is here and it still kinda works on mine so you could try this. 2. As far as being friendlier - it's not. Personally, I would think proboards would want to make all of its users happy and would appreciate knowing that something bothers them and why. Besides the fact that it propagates the myth that everyone is cisgendered and upholds the gender binary.

You add anything other than female and male and you have a whole other population unhappy. There are indeed a great number of folks who don't buy into "politically correctness". This is just a fact.

"Political correctness is a term used to describe language, ideas, policies, or behavior seen as seeking to minimize offense to gender, racial, cultural, disabled, aged or other identity groups." So people for being offensive? I can understand not wanting to be forced to adopt certain customs for political correctness, but would they complain that proboards is making some people happy without actually hurting anyone else? Also, may I ask if this code has any purpose other than adding gender-specific pronouns to certain parts of the board?

This change is here, and from the looks of it, here to stay. There are a lot of things ProBoards has done to make this service better; it's a great -free- service, and if they want to make gender-specific selections mandatory, then I think it's a small sacrifice to make for otherwise great -free- service. There have been solutions offered for those who do not wish to select a gender (pick either one and choose to hide it), but no one wants that, they just want their way. ProBoards is an excellent forum provider; I don't think that one change should cause such a ruckus, especially since it appears that no amount of going back and forward will change the staffs' mind.

Craig, there was no option for "snake" so i picked male. Sometimes you can not tell if the person who are talking to is a male or female by just there username. The little image helps me out.

OMG! I can not believe a handful of folks are having a hissy fit over such a minor change. It is a free site! Accept the changes or leave and go to another site if you can't deal with it. There are so many other things you could put your energy into, to complain about, in this world other than whine about your gender!! An Admin is the "owner" of their forum. I think they have the right to know their members gender. If you are that paranoid, turn your computer off and unplug it. Proboards improvements and the freedom to set up your forum as you like it is awesome. They are more than generous with tweaking it to please you, but it is just wrong to insist the change be eliminated completely. Stop being so selfish and self absorbed.

Well, I want to give my opinion on this as well. I think this option is great. Not for the purpose of only changing the links so they get more personal (which is nice) it is also really handy in conversations. I once had that a saw a picture of two people in the proboards group album. I thought the username that came with it was that of the girl. So I looked up the username in the memberslist and made a pm to her. It turns out that is was her husband. The way I talk to the other gender (flirting) is very different from talking to my own gender. I think you know what I mean. Also, those people that are very against filling this in because they think it dangerous. I think those people are really paranoia. They probably don't use there real e-mail address, because people could find out. They are also not using there home computer because when they go here, there ip is logged. Those things can do a lot more harm that a simple gender specification. So I'm all for the "gender as a must" idea and am very much against the option to hide it. This needs to be a more open community, so you can also remove the option to hide the age. I mean there are happening things on this (and other) forums where it's best to know someones age. Also conserning respect for the elderly people here. And same with birthdays (age faking), you can fake your gender, but then don't be surprised if you get a flirt pm from a guy.
And I also see a discussion about adding more genders. I'm sorry but that's just ridicules. There are only two genders of people in the world: Male and Female nothing more. Although since a couple of years you actually got a mixed gender, also known as she-males (don't know if there is a male version of that). That are girls with both the private parts of a man and a woman. Though in the minority here, it would be nice to add an extra option for that selected kind of group. Only don't know what to call it. And I think that if you select that, you can get problems because most people aren't fully accepting this new gender and will ignore you or worse.

Only don't know what to call it. And I think that if you select that, you can get problems because most people aren't fully accepting this new gender and will ignore you or worse. Best solution: Undisclosed option. Also, those people that are very against filling this in because they think it dangerous. I think those people are really paranoia. They probably don't use there real e-mail address, because people could find out. They are also not using there home computer because when they go here, there ip is logged. Those things can do a lot more harm that a simple gender specification. I use a valid email and home computer, but have always had my gender set to undisclosed. I am not paranoid about it, I just prefer to have as little data about me as possible stored on servers. While some people are over the top with how careful they are, there are plenty of people like me, who are NOT paranoid, just enter minimal data. Just because some people don't want to enter some data, doesn't mean that they will go to extremes to be anonymous. I don't care about IPs, as mine is way off.
