IMO, Photobucket has made a bad business decision, and they will pay dearly for this! Tinypics is also owned and operated by Photobucket, so I am certain, they will follow suit in time. The ads were so annoying on Photobucket, that once I deleted them all, I was outta the mood! So I choose Imgur and transferred all my images there and deleted from Photobucket and Tinypics. Imgur has no ads and is so much quicker! You all may want to check it out! So what do you suggest?

Ah yes, hindsight! A wonderful thing, innit? LOL I'm dreading the next conversion but like I said to sassy, I'm just going to disable 90% of my themes and keep a handful. It's just not worth the aggravation and rise in blood pressure. That's why I'm putting my plugin images and theme images on ProBoards' storage this time around.
There will be no next time for me. First Imgur does this. Now P'Bucket. They'll be others to follow. Of that, I am sure.

Unless they realize the mass exodus from Photobucket and decide not to. Who knows? lol I just don't want to go through this ever again. Too much time spent designing and loading and making it purdy for members and then this. I'm just getting too old for this! hahaha We really need to be able to just upload from our computers and be done with it.

For me, from this point forward, the choice is obvious. I will not rely on a third party again. I won't go through this nightmare again.
But I am backing the images on a very trustworthy site and I do have all of my images on my own external hard drive, as well.

IMO, there needs to be "pay as much as you use" model as far as hosting images goes. Something reasonable for people who use a small amount of both storage and bandwidth and the more you use of each, the more you pay. I hate to say it but it needs to be "metered" as that would seem to be fairest way to keep prices down for light users and the best way to make high users pay for their share. That exists. Both Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure offer usage-based file hosting. The cost is low and likely wouldn't exceed $5 (not by much, anyway) per month for most PB forums. But it can all be a bit more complicated than using a basic image host, especially for novices. The monthly cost is based on four factors: storage, bandwidth, file access operations, and region. Storage is pretty straightforward: how much hard drive space are you taking up in a given month? Amazon charges about $0.03 per GB per month. Bandwidth should also be obvious. Amazon charges about $0.09 per GB per month. File access operations are a bit trickier simply because you're being charged for things most people might otherwise take for granted. You get charged every time a file is requested (as in loaded, like on a page; so yes, you have to pay both per request and for how much bandwidth gets used during that request). You get charged every time you upload a new file. You're charged for moving files between directories. File deletion is free. These are all considered requests and, in the interest of bringing them to parity with ProBoards' ad-free pricing for familiarity and convenience, cost roughly $0.04 per 50,000 requests. Keep in mind that, unlike ad-free pageviews, each individual image on the page equals its own request. So, 20 unique images on a page generate 20 requests each and every time someone loads the page. (Setting long-term cache control headers can help cut down on requests and bandwidth costs, provided your members and visitors allow their browsers to cache images and other files you may host and link to.) Finally, the region(s) you deploy to affect the actual fees charged. You get the option of choosing where in the world you'd like your files hosted, but the basic laws of supply and demand, as well as operational costs, mean some regions are more expensive than others. The cheapest storage option would be a bad choice if it's on the opposite side of the planet from where most of a forum's members and visitors are located. Not only will it slow the loading time of pages, it can also cause your file access costs to rise as requests from outside the hosted region cost more than requests from within. Oh, plus there's a $0.50/month charge for hosting a domain name with Amazon's web hosting package. Have your eyes glazed over yet? It's not too bad once you get a grasp on it. Figuring out which package you actually want/need is probably the hardest part. Anyone can sign up, but these are really CDN services intended to be used by larger sites (yes, medium-large sites use third-party hosting for linked files all the time), so there's a general expectation that the parties signing up know what they're doing. This is also why the costs are so shockingly low, as they expect to make their money off of major sites with high-volume storage and bandwidth needs. They welcome the little guy, though, and it's a marvelous deal. I imagine most PB forums are low traffic to the point that they would qualify for Amazon's free tier, which is, well, free. Only for the first year, though.

I haven't. But looking through their ToS ~ I'm not sure a forum isn't comparable to a blog ~ which they consider commercial usage requiring a subscription.
imageshack.com/terms
I would contact their Support department in that link, if you are considering using them. I have been trying them out. Their TOS isn't very clear on this issue. You get to use it free for the first 30 days. I then expect they might charge me for the way I'm using it after that. However, I think the fee is around $30 instead of that ridiculous $400! Thanks for the info, m2marsh , for those who want to use ImageShake. But there are still free hosts out there though, like village.photos. Quick, easy and fast.
But I'll be putting all of my images for my themes, plugins and board on ProBoards' storage and using a host for my non ProBoards' images.
Hard lesson to learn. I'm more appreciative than ever that ProBoards has this feature.

Meh, well photobucket caught the reminder of my accounts today. It's been crazy trying to sort everything out. I went forum to forum no matter what platform they were fixing way too much lol. Now if I could get one of our wonderful admins/reds to check and make sure there isn't anything I missed on my forum.... *whistles softly* I do monitor this thread to stay informed on how the photobucket situation is impacting our members, and to also update our External Resources list with image hosting sites as new services are recommended and their merits discussed. Sorry to say it's not our responsibility to review forums for photobucket links/images. However if you encounter one of their 'please update your account' images and are unable to find the source, create a thread on support with a link to the thread/post/profile/etc. where you are encountering their image and we will assist in locating it.

Has anyone found another reliable free host? I still have TinyPic and they used to be lots better. They get hacked 2 or 3 times a year. This is really my only complaint.

With a lot of people it is not that Photobucket changed their TOU, it was the sly underhanded way in which they did it, and the exorbitant jump in prices. Many users who want to post on forums/blogs etc. use a small amount of storage, on my free account I was using 1.3gb, and on my paid one 2.2 Gb. Why would I want 500Gb of storage??? They should have at least had a sliding scale which allowed for 3rd party hosting for users so they would only have to pay for what they wanted. You don't buy a sack of potatoes to make a few chips/french fries. Anyway the damage is done for them now and people moving elsewhere. I posted earlier in this discussion about Fotki and have to say they are brilliant and their customer service is excellent and so friendly. They ask is there anything else they can do to make their site better, I have mentioned a couple of things to them and they are looking into this.
During the years with Proboards (and I had been with them since 2004) I never had service like that, usually the automated response telling me to clear my cache etc. which I had already done then when I got back to them it was days before anything was sorted.
I am happy to pay $24 for the service I am getting now and still recommend them highly.

I am happy to pay $24 for the service I am getting now and still recommend them highly. Sorry to hear you're not a fan of our support service? Personally I like to think I go out of my way to provide the best support I can. Working on this side of the help profession, I'm keenly aware of the service I receive when reaching out to customer service of entities I deal with. I can spot a canned answer a mile away and will often call them on it. That said, I've been dealing with computers since... well for a long time, and without physically being at your computer or seeing what you see at the time of an issue, we have to start at the beginning and go through the checklist. Since clearing the browser's cache will solve a lot of issues we ask that. Even at the office here if we experience a problem, we'll be asked if we've cleared our cache. So see, we're not immune to it. Years ago I bought a new monitor for work. It would not turn on. I check the plug connection, the power strip, everything. (Of course I know what I'm doing as I'm the one that would help the others in the office.) So I finally call their support line and they go through the checklist, is it plugged in, does the strip/socket have power, etc. Then next is, did you turn it on? I'm thinking how dumb do you think I am, of course I did. Well guess what, this monitor had a secondary power button on the back, not just the regular button on the front. Boy I felt stupid. Lesson learned. Follow the checklist cuz you never know. This is why we ask if you've cleared your cache. PS> If you want you can pay me for personalized support service via PM. I charge reasonable rates. jk
