A common question comes up around here on the discussion boards and GOAYB. "What should I name my board?" or "I don't know what to name my board!". Most cases, a person will have a name already picked out when signing up for a forum. However, there are the rare occasions when they know what kind of board they want, but haven't a clue what to name it. So this thread is to help tell your experiences in deciding a title and give some suggestions in picking out a name. Try thinking of something that symbolizes the theme of your forum. For example, if you like Harry Potter, then think of things that make you think Harry Potter. Should be relatively easy, but the trick is to think of something that is catchy, recognizable and yet unique. So I would suggest thinking of one particular theme. So lets say I like the the Dobby scenes. So then I would think of all the words that reminded me of him, such as , elf, house elf, Dobby, house slave, eyes, magical, pillowcase, sock, Malfoy, etc...and then I would try and match them up. The House of Dobby, The Magical Sock, The Eyes of Dobby...you get the idea. Another thing, I like to do, is be unique. It is hard to come up with a name that hasn't been used before. You normally wouldn't think its hard, but it is. I would suggest looking at a thesaurus and dictionary.A simple task to be sure, but sometimes simplicity is best. This is a good way to find words of the same meaning and put a bit of creativity in your title. So , maybe instead of The House of Dobby, The Magical Sock, The Eyes of Dobby you might try something like, Dobby's Domain, Freedom of a House Elf, An Elf's Vision, etc These are some tricks I like to use when giving suggestions. What are your techniques, experiences and suggestions? Also, the name of your forum should be search engine sensative. Meaning that it is easily picked up and search by users of search engines. Try to get it straight to the point as possible. Try to eliminate words like the, to, of, a, etc..

I agree with D.D, it should be search sensitive. Aside from that, I also believe that it should be easy to remember. Even though this normally applies to sites, if you have some hard-to-remember name such as oepytaklhfq837192 (random numbers, etc.) people aren't going to come back to your forum, since it'll be so hard to remember what to type in the address bar. I guess favoriting it could work, but either way, you've lost some potential member forever in my view :\ And as most of the other people said, it should go along with your board. I guess that's somewhat of common sense, but I have in fact seen boards that are named "Lia's Board" when the board itself is actually about Harry Potter, and etc. So that doesn't really give the right feel to the board, I guess.

The name of your board should match your topic. If you want harry potter, then it should have something to do with that. But the URl doesn't really matter that much. There's this anime board called the Shining Light and the URL is kimiko24.proboards...
Just as long as your name matches.

I believe All Forum Names should be free from leet, 1337, or extreme internet lingo.
I've been seeing this lately with many boards so I thought I'd bring this up.
Try avoid putting numbers into the name (leet)
Also You should stray far away from this....
4eva kewl lol zorz roxx rofl
etc...
People won't be able to find you forums in searches and it makes your forum look disgraceful and unintelligent.

I have a Sci-Fi themed forum, and I'm thinking something like the 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea Forums, but then I remembered a key scene from the book, the Giant Squid battle. Is The Giant Squid Forums a good name?

I'll try and think of another sea related name, but i do agree that the Giant Squid Forums is a bit strange.

I'll try and think of another sea related name, but i do agree that the Giant Squid Forums is a bit strange. If you have a generalize forum, like scif, I would suggest trying to name it something more universal in all aspects of scifi. However, if you were to name it Giant Squids forums...that is okay too... I mean there are alot of successful but strangely named forums..look at Rotten Tomatoes and such....I recommend picking a scene if your forum is topic specific....but if your into using squids....think outside the box...and be unique.... Space Squids Leagues under the Sea Space Sea Scifi Squid the gppd think about scifi, is that you can think outside the box...

What about teen chat sites? It seems that all the interesting names are either in use or cliched. Teen Magic, for example, seems a little... weird. Teen Scene, seems rather girly, Teen Space too similar to another site. What principles should we keep in mind while naming our sites?

Its your forum, so it should reflect some of you....perhaps trying to implement something that you have a passion about. For instance if you are in Drama and enjoy acting...perhaps something like Teen Drama or The Teen Stage.... If you like Cars, then something like The Teen Track ... you get my meaning...make it something that you will enjoy and feel that you can work with ...

Or you can make it really interesting and just call it TEEN and make it an acronum (I think that's what they call it) where every letter stands for something. For example: The Exciting Enjoyable Net or something

When I'm trying to think of a name for my forum, I think about what the forum is going to be about. Then I make a list of all the things that I like about that thing. I have a Harry Potter one and I like the magic, so I thought of some of the spells and called it Accio Hogwarts. You should always TRY to do something that nobody else has every done before for a name.

I am a member on a number of train forums and all have names relatting to which area of the country they would like to talk about railroading in that area. ie like Western Rails, Rails of the USA, Midwestern Rails. Do you think it would be a good idea to have a forum about railroading in a certain state or something of that sort.

I think I if you just have it regional, it should be fine, maybe 2 or 3 a region.
And for a sci-fi forum, do you think The Twlight Zone is a good name?

And for a sci-fi forum, do you think The Twlight Zone is a good name? The thing you have to remember is if you have something with a brand name or very recognised name, it'll be hell to find in the search engines, and twice, three times as hard to determine your site from any official site, fan site aor the many other millions of sites with the same name. If you go to vague however it'll be hard to find as well as no-onw will think of that, noone will think to look for that. You need to go middle of the road, have something creative but relates to sci-fi bacause using something already very established will not do your forum any good (IMO).
