Please note these changes are already in place This thread remains for users to discuss the issue Martyn
Due to the continued problems with large email providers blocking our email we are to make the activation process for forums optional. This will remain in place until we are satisfied that email delivery rate is back to the level it used to be. I will be implementing these changes during Tuesday, and the changes will go live before the end of the working day PDT. As yet I have not made the decision as to whether the default setting on forums when this change is activated, will be to have activation emails disabled or not. At the moment I'm inclined to have it disabled on known problems servers, but keep it in place on servers which have not been blocked. This server will continue to use activation emails. Please note: - Forum admins will use this change at their own risk. If this process results in problem users being able to sign up multiple times etc, it is not a problem we are able to help with.
- When the email blocks are removed, and emails are again working correctly, all accounts not activated will need to be activated (users using the optional activation feature, or who signed up before these issues will obviously not need to reactivate).
- In order to combat email spamming, any user created at a forum without activations, will NOT receive any mass emails. This is to stop accounts being created in the name of others to have them receive spam. We are not a spam provider, so we will ensure this change doesn't affect innocent members of the public. There will be an optional "activation" feature still available for users who wish to activate their own accounts to allow them to receive mails
- The above information will be stated on the registration page so users know the may 1 day need to activate
If you have any questions please use this thread EDIT: Please see this thread for more information on the issue: support.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=support&action=display&n=1&thread=53448

i think this should be a permanent solution, that is, to have the "activation code" sent set as OPTION, so that Admins can decide to use it at their discretion.
in any case since manual approval by Admins is also available, so this would help control who gets into their forums.
as for gmail invite, dear Blank are u implying that all users who register to our proboards forums should only use gmail accounts ? not a good idea...........
regards

It's just that almost nobody has ever had problems with receiving activation emails via Gmail. ~Blank

He could always promote the use of a provider like hotmail which have physically blocked many of our servers
Gmail have not, we have a very good ucess rate with gmail, so it is indeed a good version to promte their use for PB

Brilliant idea martyn, not only are there problems but when a user is told to enter their activation key they sometimes get confused and dont bother then you have a permanently inactive member. great idea mate!

- Would it be possible to name the servers that could be affected by this change please???
This should hopefully make things a little clearer I think

All servers will have the option to remove it inthe admin area, but theres no point removing the extra level of protection automaticly on servers where there isnt a problem
So forums on a problem server will have it defualted to activation emails are off, good servers default to it being on, withthe option of removing it
