I'm not sure why you would need to "track" the accounts, Dylan. Care to elaborate?

For instance, an idiot was posting on my friend's forum who kept spamming. I'd use the IP to make sure that same idiot wasn't attacking my forum.

You get the first few digits of his IP i believe, I guess you can put in, let's say..
123.1234.12*, i believe it would ban everyone with that IP and similar IPs. Or, just ban his account when you actually do see it.

Well, i am sure that it does do that in the current version of ProBoards. You can try it out if you want. Edit: Rick Ace removed his post.

123.123.1.xx would ban everyone under that from 123.123.1.1 to 123.123.1.256 but that would be guessing and I could be banning any random member. Also, it's best to catch them before they start. I don't want to be cleaning out 500 threads and getting messages sent to me by my members saying they've received 300 new spam messages with porn images.

I was withdrawing my comment. But it said that I would like a response from an administrator, because you had a reputation of being wrong from earlier.

You still get to see the first three numbers. For example, 1.2.3.XXX
Then you can just ban 1.2.3.* on any other forum. There are 4,294,967,296 possible IP addresses. Since we give you the first 3 numbers, blocking based on the first three numbers means that you will be accurate to within 256 possible IPs.

To add to Pat...
And we will still be protecting and respecting people's privacy. If you know the IP of a spammer you can still enter it. If you get that from another forum then you can wildcard it. Privacy protected, spammer stopped.
We've explained in detail why we are doing the things we are doing. We are maintaining all of your functionality and adding even more. We are protecting members and increasing security for everyone.

So i was technically right, lol. I would block 1.2.3.* if the spammer did have an IP in that range.

This thread moves terribly fast- Anyways- thank you so much for the screenshots, it did help me understand more of what's going on. While I'm still a bit worried on how things are going to work, I'm sure with the wildcard and ranges it would work quite a bit better. The only thing I'm worried about is when you ban a range/wildcard area, what happens if you want to keep the ban, but let the member in? Is that even possible? (I highly doubt someone would have a ban IP address that close to something we've banned, but I'm just curious if it could work if somehow, by magic, it did happen.) (I'll just make another topic for any other questions though. Thanks for your help!)

You simply click the ban button on the user that's being disruptive/spamming etc and tick username and that will ban that USER - as it would ban His full IP from the forum...
Banning the the first three set of didgets xx.xxx.xx would ban users on that network so you really want to be using/clicking the ban button and username to ban the full IP
While i respect proboards wanting to protect users privacy The one think that troubles me is when wanting to check a IP on stopforumspam or whatismyipaddress to check if the IP is a know spammer it will be difficult to do so it cannot view full IP's

Maybe i'm misunderstanding the question, but I'm reading this as you want to ban someone, but still let them use the forum? In that case you would not ban them. Banning them blocks access to the forum for that person.

My forum is set to limited registration. I put every single applicant's IP in a whatismyipaddress search, and deny all accounts that turn up as proxy servers (known or suspected), and from places like Thailand, India, Malaysia, etc. They are automatically suspected spammers. I also check stopforumspam, and add my own data as necessary. So, the new privacy rules could definitely work against me there. Otherwise, I don't care.

We have a more robust spam detection and elimination system going into place on our end so that forum owners do not need this

Great to hear, Patrick. I notice the spammers are even hitting the v5 board and it just drives me nuts. LOL.
